Last Ones Out

Plot Synopsis

An American man living in South Africa is prepped for surgery. While he is waiting on the operating table, a zombie outbreak occurs. He, along with two of the doctors, and another man (I believe the brother of one of the doctors) must work together to survive.

Positives

The makeup effects are pretty good. A couple of the actors are alright. There’s a scene near the beginning where the screen is completely black. The main character is essentially in the dark while we can’t see the zombie mayhem, only hear it. That scene is the only real effective moment of horror in the movie. 

Negatives 

I suppose I’ll start with the main character. I hated following this asshole. I understand what the movie was trying to do. Give us a main character who is a selfish asshole that has to learn to be less of a dick as the movie goes on. The problem is: I don’t think the movie is able to pull the arc off. It doesn’t feel like an arc. It feels more like he spends the movie as a selfish dumbass that happens to make one selfless act at the end of the movie. I guess there’s a scene earlier in the movie where maybe we’re supposed to believe he makes the noble choice. Frankly, I don’t see it that way. So, most of the movie, the main characters are trying to make their way to this extraction point purely because of the main character’s selfishness. He knows about it because of a conversation he had over the phone with his fiancée. They get to their primary destination a little over halfway through the movie. The main character has an argument with his fiancée. He catches up with the other main characters and is like “I’m going with you.” The argument he has with his fiancée has music playing over it. We are never told what the argument is about, at least not explicitly. The fiancée is kind of a pointless character too. She doesn’t serve any narrative purpose. The actor playing the main character is easily the worst actor in the movie. Every line delivery he gives is so stiff. The characters, even the ones I like, are all idiots. They constantly make stupid decisions. Without getting too deep into spoilers, I hate the ending.

Final Thoughts

The best way I can describe this movie is: We have “28 Days Later” at home. In case you haven’t noticed, I really don’t think this movie is worth your time.

Now her oldest daughter Tatum is the same age that she was when the Ghostface killings began. Clown in a Cornfield

Plot Synopsis: Not long after her mother dies, Quinn Maybrook moves to a small town with her father after he accepts a position as the town doctor. Quinn befriends a group of teens and discovers the town has generational rift between her new friends and the adults of the town. Then, things take a deadly turn when the teenagers of the town are being murdered by someone dressed as the town's mascot, Frendo the Clown.  Positives:  This movie is directed by Eli Craig, the man who directed Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Little Evil. Because of this, the movie does a good job blending horror and comedy. It's also just shot well. I also appreciate the kills. In particular, there's one involving a saw and bench press. A lot of the acting is actually pretty damn good too. I would already expect that out of someone like Kevin Durand. But, I think the best performance in the movie is Katie Douglas as the lead. My 10 Least Favorite Horror Movies

This is something I've been wanting to do, and thinking about for a good long while. What are the horror movies I truly hate the most of the hundreds I have seen in the almost 31 years I have been alive. For the time being, this is what I came up with.  Dishonorable Mentions: A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010): Some interesting ideas, but the movie never feels like committing to them. I hate the fact this movie also takes what was subtext in the original and just makes it text. I also feel like Katie Cassidy's character behaves more like Nancy than the actual Nancy in this movie.  Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation: Yes, it's a terrible movie, but it's mostly off the list because it's insane.  Scream 7: The initial review I wrote leaned positive.
