Wednesday Season 1 Episode 3: Friend or Woe
Episode Synopsis:
Wednesday's mystery deepens as she learns the prophecy she is a part of is connected to the town's founder, Joseph Crackstone.
Positives:
So, one of the things that's happened in the background of the season thus far that I actually realized I quite like in this episode specifically is the budding relationship between Enid and Ajax. A large part of that is that I genuinely think Enid is just adorable. One character that was hinted at in the second episode that I was waiting to address in this episode is Wednesday's ancestor Goody. Because I don't want to necessarily be too redundant in my episodic reviews, I think this episode is as good of a place as any to talk about Jenna Ortega. She pulls double duty periodically through the season, and she does a really good job at making Wednesday and Goody feel like two completely distinct characters. Up to this point, I think this episode does the best job at setting up some of its potential suspects near the end. Finally, I think this episode has the best sense of humor of the three episodes so far. In particular, during the scene where Wednesday and Thing set Crackstone's statue on fire, and there's a guy wearing a fez who basically sleeps through the whole thing.
Negatives:
This is a fairly minor nitpick, but it harkens back to a similar problem I had in the first episode. There's a scene where Wednesday and Xavier are talking about Wednesday's psychic powers, and she flat asks "are you mansplaing my powers to me?" I don't know. This feels like someone writing a line assuming "it's what the kids say" and it just makes me cringe.
Thoughts:
This was a pretty damn good episode, much closer in quality to the first episode for me, and better than the second episode.
My Rating:
