Wednesday Season 1 Episode 1: Wednesday's Child is Full of Woe
Episode Summary:
After dumping some piranha into a swimming pool as revenge against a water polo team for bullying her brother, Wednesday Addams is expelled and sent to a school for outcasts. Before long, Wednesday stumbles into a murder mystery and learns she's part of some sort of prophecy.
Positives:
The first thing I want to highlight is that right away, I love the show's tone. It's spooky, but the show almost immediately makes it clear it works as sort of an entry level horror. I like that the episode spends most of its time introducing you to the characters. It really isn't until the end of the episode when the mystery starts coming into play. I like that. I also love the music used. I think my favorite use of music in the episode is Wednesday playing Paint it, Black on the cello. Of course, I also need to mention the style. One of the big gets for the show was Tim Burton, who directed this episode, as well as the next three, and you can really feel his influence. Finally, aside from setting up the main mystery of the season, a lot of the seeds are planted for the season's side plots.
Negatives:
I'm not the biggest fan of the CGI used on the monster at the end of the episode. It's not awful, but it is pretty goofy.
Final Thoughts:
This is a pretty strong first episode. There are elements I didn't discuss, mostly because I'm saving those thoughts for a comprehensive season review. I don't necessarily want to get too redundant. It does the job needed for the first episode of a series. We're introduced to most of the central characters, as well as the season's overall mystery.
My Rating:
