Final Destination 2
Plot Synopsis:
One year after the events of the first film, Kimberly Corman is going on a road trip with her friends, when she has a vision of a deadly pile up. She manages to prevent a few people from getting on the highway. But, it doesn’t take long before Death starts coming for them one by one.
Positives:
Starting things off, when talking about these movies, you have to talk about the kills. I appreciate that a lot of the kills in this one are meaner and bloodier. I also love this movie’s balance between horror and having a dark sense of humor. The Route 23 pile up is probably the most iconic vision in the franchise. I also appreciate how this movie expands on what was established in the first film. I love the addition of Death working backwards because the events of the first movie caused a ripple effect. This movie also establishes a way to take yourself off of death’s list.
Mixed Aspects:
The main thing I have mixed feelings about is the cast. I’m not as invested in this cast of survivors. The people I’m probably the most invested in are Tony Todd and Ali Larter (the two characters carried over from the first film). AJ Cook is serviceable in the lead role, but she doesn’t quite have Devon Sawa’s screen presence.
Negatives:
So, this is something I really think needs to be addressed on its own. I really don’t like the way Alex Browning is written out. I know that negotiations fell through between Devon Sawa and the studio, but killing him off in between movies has just never sat quite right with me.
Final Thoughts:
It’s interesting. Despite a weaker set of characters compared to the first, and me not particularly liking how they handled Alex’s fate, the additions to the lore and the expansion on the first movie’s story kind of elevate this to being my favorite of the franchise.
My Rating:
