The Crow (2024)
Plot Synopsis:
After he and his girlfriend are murdered, Eric Draven is resurrected by the spirit of a crow to avenge their murders.
Positives:
There are a couple of fun action sequences near the end of the movie (in particular, one that takes place at an opera house). Bill Skarsgard is pretty solid in the lead. Hell, I would go so far as to say that he's the best performance in the movie. I also think the movie has some cool visuals every now and then.
Mixed:
The main thing I am personally mixed on is the romance between Eric and Shelley. I actually kind of appreciate that the movie really spends the first act delving into their relationship. I also don't mind the idea that we're exploring a relationship between two people that are deeply broken. The problem is that Bill Skarsgard and singer FKA Twigs have absolutely no chemistry.
Negatives:
So, I brought up the fact that Skarsgard and FKA Twigs don't have any chemistry. Well, let me just say that her performance as Shelley is my first negative. A lot of her delivery feels pretty stiff. As much as I enjoy the few action scenes we have, they can be held back by the fact that the villains are pretty lackluster. The original does everything to make you hate the villains in the original. Here, there really isn't anything that makes them stand out. Without going into spoilers, I didn't particularly love the ending. If anything, it felt like they didn't really understand why the original comic was written. Finally, I don't know why they made the choice to do the Eric Draven story again. There's not really a reason for it. This could have easily been another sequel.
Final Thoughts:
Ultimately, I expected something a lot worse than what I got. As much as I really harped on the negatives, the final result really was just a generic comic book movie at best.
My Rating:
