Scream (1996)

Plot Synopsis:

Sidney Prescott finds herself at the center of a brutal killing spree one year after the murder of her mother.

Positives:

The first thing I want to highlight is the movie's whodunnit aspect. On the surface, you might expect the outcome. But, it can also happen in a way that you might not see coming (especially on your first viewing). The opening scene is one of the most iconic scenes in any horror movie. Period. I think there's also something to the idea that this was arguably a comeback performance for Drew Barrymore. I mean, how often can you say that for an actor or actress that's killed off in the opening of a slasher movie? I love the idea that these are characters who are aware of horror movies. This plays into just how aware Scream is of the horror genre. It wears its love for the genre on its sleeve. This is one of those rare slasher movies where every actor just seems to bring their A-Game. The characters all feel perfectly cast to me. Highlights for me are Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, and Jamie Kennedy. But, let me reiterate. I think all of the actors work pretty well. Speaking of the characters, these are some of my favorite characters in any slasher movie. Sidney Prescott is a top-tier final girl in my opinion, and Neve Campbell plays the part so very well. This is a movie that has a sense of humor, and embraces that fact.

Negatives:

I'm going to start by saying that this is a little bit of a stretch. As memorable as some of the kills are, they aren't particularly creative. There are a couple of exceptions. But, for the most part, the kills are just kind of stabbings.

Final Thoughts:

I should come clean and say this is my favorite horror movie. This movie is probably my earliest memory of any horror movie, and is pretty much where my love for the genre started. If you haven't seen it, then I recommend giving it a watch.

My Rating:
