Seance

Plot Synopsis:

A new student at an all-girls boarding school joins a group of popular girls in performing a seance. Before too long, the girls start ending up dead. This causes them to wonder what exactly they may have awakened.

Positives:

I can safely say I didn't necessarily know what direction this movie was always going to take. I do also want to compliment Suki Waterhouse in the lead role. She actually does a pretty good job in making me want to root for her. For the most part, I actually think the characters have just enough dimension to them. They aren't overly deep or complex, but I wouldn't call them paper thin either.

Mixed Aspects:

As far as the elements I'm mixed on, I really only have one. At its core, Seance is a slasher movie. Yeah, I have pretty mixed feelings on the kills. A couple of them are pretty memorable and gruesome in just the right way for me. Most of them don't really do much to stand out as being anything particularly memorable. They feel almost too simple for me.

Negatives:

Outside of Suki Waterhouse, most of the acting isn't anything special to me. Granted, it's not quite as bad as a lot of the slasher movies I've seen, but that doesn't make it good acting either. But, the big problem I have with this movie is that I just don't have that much to say about it. It's just not a movie that did all that much to stick with me, and I only watched it within the past week.

Final Thoughts:

I guess the best way for me to sum up how I felt about Seance after watching it was: it's fine. It's really a movie that just sort of shows up and does its job, nothing more, nothing less. If you have access to Shudder, then it's a decent enough way to kill 90 minutes, especially if that's all you're looking for.

My Rating:
