A Nightmare on Elm Street
Plot Synopsis:
When her friends start mysteriously dying in their sleep, Nancy decides to get to the bottom of what's happening. This will lead her going head to head with the villainous Freddy Krueger.
Positives:
OK, so my first positive is Freddy Krueger himself. I love everything about the character in this movie. It's easy to see why Freddy became such an iconic villain. Between his look. But, perhaps the biggest props need to go to Robert Englund and his performance. Speaking of characters, I love Nancy as a final girl. She's smart and capable, and actually really easy to root for. On that note, I also really adore Heather Langenkamp's performance. The basic idea of a dream-based killer leads to some pretty creative death scenes. Wes Craven adds some great atmosphere to his direction as well. This movie has so many iconic scenes. I mean if you just show an image from this movie to someone, there's a good chance they'll know it's from A Nightmare on Elm Street. I also love this movie's score. It's memorable and somewhat haunting. I should also say that I like the slow build to the reveal of who exactly Freddy is and what is motives are. Finally, I always get a kick out of the novelty of seeing Johnny Depp in his first movie role.
Mixed Aspects:
This isn't something I had issues with necessarily. It's more of an observation. The parents in this movie are genuinely bad parents. It isn't something that bothers me, but it's worth brining up because I could see how it might bother others.
Negatives:
My only negative with this movie is the ending. Without giving anything away, it just feels clunky. It comes off as though it was tacked on, probably because it was.
Final Thoughts:
I'm going to be honest, this is one of my favorite horror movies. Any issues I have with the movie are very few and very minor. If you've never seen this movie: do yourself a favor and check it out.
My Rating:
🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸
I love this movie so much! There is so much to love! You are right about Freddy being such a great villain in general but Englund gives him something so special. And Nancy is a good final girl; maybe because she was one of the true final girls before it became a total cliche.
