Slither
Plot Synopsis:
A group of alien slugs descend on a small town, leaving only a small group of survivors to try and stop the invasion before it can spread.
Positives:
This is a movie that was written and directed by James Gunn, and his fingerprints are all over this movie. It's a sci-fi horror movie with a darkly comedic tone. For me, it strikes just the right balance with its humor. Adding on that, because this is a movie written and directed by James, that darkly comedic tone can be pretty mean-spirited. It mean it, this is a movie that shows a willingness to kill kids. This is a movie with a great cast including the likes of Elizabeth Banks, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and Jenna Fischer. All of the actors in this movie feel like they understand exactly the kind of movie they are in. I also have to compliment the movie's practical effects. They are just the right kind of gross, and I love it. I almost get sort of an 80s vibe, something like the remake of The Blob, just to give some idea of what kind of movie you're in for with this movie. This movie is also a pretty lean 90 minutes. It seems like it knows exactly how long it needs to be.
Mixed Aspects:
This might seem strange, but I have mixed thoughts on the references. The horror references we do get are pretty fun for me as a horror fan. But, I kind of wish there could have been a couple more.
Negatives:
As much as I genuinely enjoyed the movie's practical effects, every now and then, there are some digital effects, and they don't look particularly good.
Final Thoughts:
So, this was a first time watch for me for this Halloween. Overall, I really dug this movie. I can easily see this becoming a yearly watch for me. It strikes just the right tone for me, and I have to recommend this movie to sci-fi horror fans.
My Rating:
🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸
Man, it's been ages since I've watched this! Although I do remember enjoying the cast.
