Friday the 13th Part 3

Plot Synopsis:

Following the events of the second movie, another group of twenty-somethings runs afoul of Jason Voorhees.

Positives:

The first thing I have to say is that this is the movie where we officially get Jason Voorhees as we know and love him. Steve Miner returns to direct this third film. Once again, I actually think he displays some knowledge of how to build up tension and atmosphere. Adding on to that, I once again have to highlight the music in this movie. I mean this is a movie that has a disco rendition of the theme song, and I honestly kind of love it. Something I actually appreciated more on this viewing were some of the more humorous moments in the film. A good chunk of those moments actually kind of worked for me. Finally, I have to compliment some of the kills. As usual, they tend to be some of the standout elements. In particular, I really like the handstand kill.

Mixed Aspects:

I honestly have mixed feelings towards the opening scene. The movie actually begins with the climax of the second film. I kind of understand why it's here. However, it isn't new footage. It's literally just the ending of the second film, or at least, part of the ending. The characters are a bit of a mixed bag as well. I don't think there's anything wrong with them necessarily. However, I also don't particularly care for many of them either. For example, I think Chris and Vera work decently enough and have just enough shading to them as characters, and I think the trio of bikers are pretty fun. But, I also think a lot of them are boring husks that are clearly just there to die. The characters in this movie are pretty sizable step down from the second movie.

Negatives:

The main thing I really do have to criticize is the fact that movie is a bit too rinse and repeat, right down to the movie's ending jump scare with the lake. Also, I never realized how much I don't care for the movie's 3-D effects. Granted, they aren't the worst. But, they can be pretty annoying. I also think this movie suffers a little bit in the pacing department, especially after how tight part 2 felt. Finally, the movie introduces a plot point involving the final girl having a previous encounter with Jason. It doesn't really make a lot of sense, no matter how you look at it.

Final Thoughts:

Like most of the movies in the Friday the 13th franchise, this movie is pretty barebones when it comes to the plot. As I've already pointed out, this really does have a strong rinse and repeat feeling to it that I actually think hurts it a little bit. While I do get some enjoyment out of it, I can also say that it's nowhere near my favorite of the franchise.

My Rating:
