Saw VI

Plot Synopsis:

Insurance agent William Easton finds himself trapped in a game based on the actions he takes because he perceived as choosing whether people live or die. Meanwhile, Hoffman finds the heat starting to close in on him.

Positives:

As usual, I always have to highlight Tobin Bell's performance. I am glad the flashbacks have been used to keep John Kramer (and as an extension Tobin Bell) around. Another element this movie adds that I like is the idea that Jill has been more involved in John's games than the previous movies might have led on. This is probably the most I have liked the traps and the trap plot since Saw III. Of course, my personal favorite trap in this film is the shotgun carousel. I will also say that, for me, the plot twists in this movie are quite a bit better than the twists in the previous movie.

Mixed Aspects:

While I do enjoy the trap plot of Saw VI, I will also admit that it doesn't really have much of anything to do with Hoffman and Jill's storylines. I do appreciate that this movie tries to have something to say. It also isn't subtle about it. I can also say that it doesn't really bug me in this movie because I don't feel like I'm being beaten over the head with a message. Once again I have no real opinion one way or the other about Hoffman as a character. I don't like him. I don't hate him. I just don't care about him. For example, there are flashbacks in this movie that bring Amanda back into play. I'm highlighting this because I think it reiterates my feelings that Amanda is more engaging presence than Hoffman.

Negatives:

Something I have noticed as I have gone through these movies is the tendency to kill off protagonists. On its own, I don't really mind this decision. However, the issue I tend to have is my feeling that it's usually the wrong characters that are killed off. Most of the time, these are decisions made in regards to the police story lines.

Final Thoughts:

Looking back at this movie on re-watch, I think I enjoyed more this time around. Keep in mind, I have always kind of dug this movie. But, after the past couple movies being films I enjoyed less on rewatch, having a Saw movie I enjoyed more was actually pretty refreshing for me.

My Rating:
