Saw III

Plot Synopsis:

As John Kramer is on his deathbed, he and his apprentice Amanda kidnap a doctor and task her with keeping him alive. Meanwhile, grieving father Jeff is put through a game where he has life and death in his hands as he confronts the people who had varying levels of responsibility in son's death.

Positives:

Once again, this is a film that seems to understand that Jigsaw and Amanda are the characters that should be at the center of the film. They are the best parts of these movies without a doubt in my mind. Adding on to that, I also kind of like the idea that this movie actually shows some of the cracks in Jigsaw and Amanda's sanity, which actually makes them more frightening than I think they have ever been. Something I haven't talked about too much when reviewing these movies as of yet is the traps. This movie has one of my personal favorite traps in the entire franchise.

Mixed Aspects:

The main thing I have mixed feelings about is the idea that this was originally intended to be the final chapter of a trilogy. On one hand, I do feel as though this movie has some sense of finality. On the other hand, by the end of the movie, there were still questions left unanswered. I know this is not the final chapter of the Saw franchise. I should say that the characters were a mixed bag for me. I enjoy seeing Jigsaw and Amanda. But, Jeff has to be one of my least favorite main trap characters in this franchise. I understand what they were trying to go for. It just wasn't executed as well as I think it could have been executed. Finally, I do genuinely like the twists this movie has to offer. But, I don't know that I like them as much as the twists in the first two films.

Negatives:

The main negative I have towards this movie is its length. This is the longest Saw movie at 108 minutes. Because of this, it does feel like it could be trimmed a bit. Adding on to that a little bit, I did start noticing this movie drag a little bit more, especially when compared to the first two movies. Without giving too much away, there are a couple of characters in this movie that are killed off. I'm not going to lie, I don't know if I think these characters should have died, at least not in this movie. This is something I will touch on more when I get to Saw IV.

Final Thoughts:

This is a movie I enjoyed. However, watching it again, I noticed a lot more of the problems in this particular entry. In particular, I found that it dragged a little bit more on this most recent rewatch for me. I still recommend it to Saw fans.

My Rating:

  1. Yeah, Jeff was AWFUL! I think pretty much everyone agrees he's just the worst. What was your favorite trap then?
