Species
Plot Synopsis:
A team of scientists is forced to hunt down a genetically engineered alien. Said alien has only one goal to mate with a human male and reproduce.
What I Like:
First of all, I really like the movie's cast. I mean the actors in this movie include the likes of Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker, Alfred Molina, and Michael Madsen. Michael Madsen, in particular, feels right at home in this movie. Second, this movie has something of a B-movie feel to it that mostly works for me. The fact that this movie has something of a B-movie vibe is why I think Michael Madsen works so well. He has a couple of lines I feel that only work because he's the one who says them. Given the plot, it does give me a bit of trashy fun. I also want to give credit to the alien as a character. Yes, I like Natasha Henstridge's performance. However, what sells me on this character is that she is really only acting on instinct. Her motivation seems to be survival.
What I Don't Like:
While the plot is interesting enough, it doesn't feel like the movie fully embraces being a B-movie. In many ways, I do feel as though it takes itself a little too seriously. Because of this, it's a movie I don't see having a lot of replay value for me. The kills in this movie don't really do anything to stand out to me either. This just comes off as another element the filmmakers could have taken further than they actually did.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, Species feels like a movie that's alright. It has just enough elements in it that make me lean towards the positive side of things. It has a good cast, a decent antagonist, and an interesting plot. However, I don't think the movie quite hits the right tone to make it a movie I could see myself coming back to multiple times.
My Rating:
