Final Destination Bloodlines
Plot Synopsis:
College student Stefani Reyes has nightmares every night that involve a time in the 1960s when her grandmother had a premonition of the restaurant she’s visiting on opening night collapsing and killing everyone inside. However, she intervened and managed to save everyone.
Positives:
My first positive is the new angle this movie takes. Because the grandmother, Iris, managed to save everyone that night. It took Death longer than usual. This allowed a lot of survivors to have families. Because of this, there are entire bloodlines that were never meant to exist. I love the focus this movie puts on family. It allows the characters to have a tight-knit bond. Of course, I also have to talk about Tony Todd. He managed to film his scene before his death. I genuinely appreciate the emotion behind it. The film finally reveals Bludworth’s knowledge behind Death’s design. The reason the moment truly works is that it is a goodbye from Tony Todd himself. Once again, I appreciate the embrace into dark humor. Finally, the opening premonition is great. It really feels like its own short film of this woman’s unease before everything goes wrong.
Mixed Aspects:
While I appreciate the focus on a family, the individual members of the family are a bit of a mixed bag for me. The best character is the character Erik. His actor, Richard Harmon easily has the best delivery, especially when it comes to the comedic moments. There are attempts to develop some deeper family problems, especially with the protagonist and her brother, and how that extends to their estranged mother. While I can appreciate that it’s there, it doesn’t quite feel like they were able to dig deep enough. Finally, while I think one of the kills in this is an all-timer, I’m not a huge fan of the CGI gore. While it’s better here than in, say, the fourth movie, I don’t always love how cartoony they make it.
Negatives:
I’m not a huge fan of the ending. Without getting into spoilers, it feels really predictable. It’s ground this series has touched before. However, this movie takes to a ridiculous degree that I just don’t love.
Final Thoughts:
This is another solid entry in the franchise. It’s interesting to me that this movie has the franchise’s highest Rotten Tomatoes score, when, while I enjoy it, and think it’s a good movie, I also think the franchise definitely has better entries.
