Scream 7

 Plot Synopsis:

After years of being traumatized by Ghostface killings, Sidney Prescott has relocated to the town of Pine Grove, Indiana. Now her oldest daughter Tatum is the same age that she was when the Ghostface killings began. Of course, a new Ghostface pops up to begin slicing people up to get to Sidney and her daughter.

Positives:

As usual, Neve Campbell shows up to work. I kind of like that this is a Sidney Prescott dealing with motherhood. She's still a very guarded person. I kind of like that the lesson she has to learn is that she has to teach her daughter how to be a fighter, and that Sidney needs to learn that she can't always be there to protect her kid. Isabel May is solid as Tatum. Something I like that I know is not going to be for everybody is how they utilize Matthew Lillard. I won't go into spoilers here. I also like how Chad and Mindy are integrated into the movie too. Having them as Gale's interns is actually kind of fun. I should also say that this is probably the most I've ever liked Mindy. She's always been my least favorite of the core four. Finally, I am so glad that this movie went out of its way to honor Tatum.

Mixed:

I have mixed feelings on the kills. There's one that I think is an all-timer for this franchise. One of the aspects where I feel like this movie has an easy leg up on 6 is that the kills aren't just a bunch of random background characters. There's a couple of those. But, I appreciate they don't take up the majority of the body count. Are any of the newbies in this movie going to stack with my all-time franchise favorites? No, but I do think a couple of them are played by good actors.

Negatives:

If the meta commentary of 6 was stale, it's pratically nonexistent here. 5 and 6 also had some good social commentary on toxic fandom and the idea that people will just believe anything they read on the internet, whether the evidence is there or not. Here, they try to do social commentary on true crime culture and AI, and it feels surface level. This really disappoints me because the other movies actually did a solid job on getting to a deeper level. Aside from that, the killer reveals in this one were somehow even more underwhelming.

Final Thoughts:

I still like the movie fine, but if they keep going, I'm ready to move on to something else. In many ways this reminded of 5. It replayed several beats from the first movie. It did the whole "go back to original" thing, just with the meta being downplayed. Coming out of the theater, I knew this was near the bottom of my ranking. I think writing this review has officially solidified it as my least favorite of the franchise. I don't think it's bad. But, it is the most generic.

My Rating:
