Heart Eyes

Plot Synopsis:

Two co-workers are mistaken for a couple by a notorious serial killer known for targeting couples on Valentine's Day.

Positives:

The movie has to pull off the trick of balancing following the tropes of a slasher and following the tropes of a cheesy rom-com. This balance works surprisingly well. On that same note, I also really buy into the chemistry between Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt. The characters they play are nothing new, but this is a movie that's aware of that fact. On the slasher side of things, there are some pretty damned fun, gory kills in this movie. Also, I have to appreciate that this is a movie that doesn't overstay its welcome. It's just under 100 minutes. It's a movie that's exactly as long as it needs to be, and that is very appreciated.

Mixed Aspects:

So, this a whodunnit, and, without giving anything away, I am very conflicted on the killer reveal. From what I have seen, a lot of people are disappointed with both the reveal and the motive. I actually didn't mind the motive. But, I was severely underwhelmed by the reveal. Again, without going into spoilers, my disappointment with the actual reveal is two-fold. It's underwhelming in more ways than one.

Negatives:

So, I really have one major negative with this movie. And yes, I think you can easily chalk this up to just a personal nit-pick for me. But, Devon Sawa was seriously underused. I mean it. He's only in the movie for just a couple of scenes. It just doesn't feel right to me.

Final Thoughts:

I had a ton of fun with this movie. It's not something that's re-writing the game or anything like that. It clearly is taking a lot of influence from Scream, but it was fun way to kill some time. It had likable leads and some good kills. It feels familiar, but that isn't inherently a bad thing.

My Rating:
