Nosferatu
Plot Synopsis:
Thomas Hutter is sent from Germany to Transylvania to finalize a deal with the mysterious Count Orlok. Little does he know, this will lead to deadly consequences, especially as Orlok takes an interest in Hutter's wife, Ellen.
Positives:
From a technical standpoint, this movie is immaculate. Even if you don't necessarily gel with Robert Eggers' style as a director, it should be clear that he knows what he's doing on a technical level. The sets, the costumes, the cinematography are all incredible. I also love the way the shadows are utilized. In particular, there's a shot in the trailer of the shadow of Orlok's hand spreading across this town. The performances are all incredibly strong. At this point, it should go without saying that the likes of Willem Dafoe and an unrecognizable Bill Skarsgard are going to do good work. But, the person who truly surprised me was Lily-Rose Depp. I've seen her other things and thought she was fine. Here, however, I genuinely think she is a standout.
Mixed:
The one aspect of the movie I have mixed feelings about is Count Orlok's design. It's an aspect of the film that seems to be divisive, and when you watch the movie, it's really not hard to see why.
Negatives:
So, for those who are not aware, the original Nosferatu was an unlicensed remake of Dracula. The filmmakers mainly changed the names. Because of that, this is very close to the story of Bram Stoker's novel. There are changes here and there. However, this is a very faithful remake. So, I think it should be stated that, yes, this movie is derivative.
Final Thoughts:
I think this is a pretty good gothic style vampire movie. I would say this is the type of vampire movie I would recommend to someone who likes movies like Bram Stoker's Dracula or Interview with the Vampire. Ultimately, I enjoyed this movie. I don't typically gravitate toward the more classic gothic style of vampire movie, so I can't say this a movie that's going to have huge replay value for me.
