Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
Plot Synopsis:
In an effort to make sure Jason Voorhees is truly dead, Tommy Jarvis unwittingly resurrects the dead serial killer. From there, Jason is back to his old habits of slaughtering camp counselors.
Positives:
The first thing I want to highlight in terms of the positives is the movie's tone. This is one of the earlier examples of a meta horror film, and it actually kind of works for me. Adding to that point a little bit, this is a movie that knows what kind of movie it is and really embraces that. I also think this movie has a better version of Tommy Jarvis than the previous film. This film still has something of a PTSD angle with the character, but he's a lot more active by comparison. Now, I can't talk about this movie without talking about Jason himself. C.J. Graham is one of my favorite iterations of Jason. The other thing I like is the element of having an operational summer camp. It adds a level of tension this franchise doesn't go for very often. This movie also has some pretty fun and memorable kills.
Mixed Aspects:
As much as I praised how this movie handles Tommy and Jason, I am pretty mixed on the rest of the cast. Some of the new additions are pretty fun. I do enjoy the sheriff a lot. On the other hand, most of the counselors are just kind of generic cannon fodder. There's nothing wrong with that. I just think some of the earlier movies did handle the counselors better. Megan is an okay final girl. It's clear that actress Jennifer Cooke is having fun with the role, I just don't have much attachment to her as a character. On that note, as much as I like the idea of making the camp fully operational, I think they could have done a little more with the aspect.
Negatives:
The one real negative I have with this movie is the random one scene characters. It is a common issue I have with the franchise as a whole. My issue is they aren't really characters. They're just there to show up and die.
Final Thoughts:
This is easily one of my personal favorites in the Friday the 13th franchise. I think it has just the right mix of serious and silly.
My Rating:
