Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

Plot Synopsis:

After the events of the third movie, Jason was left for dead. However, when it turns out he's still alive, he begins killing teenagers again. Jason also begins targeting the Jarvis family.

Positives:

The kills are easily the movie's primary highlight (or at least most of them are). A lot of them are nice and gruesome, something you would really want out of a slasher movie like this one. There is at least one kill that I think deserves the "so bad it's good" award. The intent was for it to be horrifying. Instead, it's just hilarious. Another thing I think really works in this movie's favor is the introduction of the character of Tommy Jarvis played by Corey Feldman. Jarvis is just a young boy, and that legitimately elevates the danger in my opinion. I can also appreciate that Crispin Glover is in this movie. He's one of those actors who always seems to bring his own weird charm to a role. I mean, his dance scene alone is one of this movie's many highlights for me. Much like the second movie, I actually think this is a movie that manages to keep a pretty good pace. Of course, I can't talk about this movie without talking about Jason himself. Ted White is an awesome Jason, easily one of my top three. Once again, the score is pretty good. I like that it's this lingering indicator that Jason is lurking nearby.

Negatives:

There are a couple of points where it almost feels like certain characters are written to be red herrings. They have these suspicious behaviors at certain times. There's a couple of reasons it doesn't quite work. First thing, we knew from the beginning that Jason was going to be the killer. Second, and the main reason it doesn't work, is because I know that's not what the writers were going for. Yet, it still kind of comes across that way. As much as I praised the majority of the kills, I should also admit that there is one kill that doesn't work. It's done completely off-screen and has no pay-off whatsoever. At this point in the franchise, I don't think keeping Jason mostly off-screen for a lot of the kills works in this movie's favor either. There's a bit of a been there-done that kind of feel to it.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, any negatives I might have with this movie really are pretty minor. If I'm being completely honest, The Final Chapter really is my favorite movie in the the franchise. This one is a fan favorite, and it's easy for me to see why.
