The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Plot Synopsis:
When a fair comes to a small German town, a series of murders begins to occur. This leaves one man to try and unravel the mystery surrounding the leader of the fair, the mysterious Caligari.
Positives:
The first thing about this movie I really want to compliment is the acting. Because this is a silent film, the actors have to rely on facial features and body movement. All of the actors do a solid enough job, especially the performers playing the antagonists. I also have to compliment the coloring. Because this movie is from the early 1900s, I kind of just expected it to be traditional black-and-white going into it. I also really dig the score. Score is especially important to a silent film, and it really works for me here, and genuinely aids the film as it goes. Finally, I kind of appreciate the fact that this movie is only 80 minutes long
Mixed Aspects:
My first mixed aspect is the production design. One one hand, I kind of like it because it looks unique. On the other hand, it does look a little too much like the background for a play. My second mixed aspect is more of a warning than anything else. If you are able to get your hands on this movie in some way, subtitles are going to be a requirement. This is a German film. The subtitles are going to be needed because whenever text comes onscreen, it is in German.
Negatives:
My main negative in this film is the pacing. It is a slow paced film, and after a while, it did kind of lose me. It started and ended interesting enough for me, but I really think the middle part of the film dragged for me.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, I did kind of enjoy this movie. A lot of the technical aspects really work for me. However, the pacing really drags a lot of the movie down for me. So, this is going to be a soft recommendation from me.
