Horror Movies for People Who Don't Like Horror
I started thinking about a list like this, and thought it could be fun to look at some movies I really enjoy that have a horror aesthetic that I could easily recommend to people who aren't necessarily fans of the genre. Some of these might stretch the definition of horror a little bit, but, there is at least a taste of the genre somewhere in these movies. This won't be in any particular order. It's just something I wanted to do. I won't feature animated movies here because I think I want to look at animated horror movies in their list.
Gremlins: I have referenced this movie a lot. It is a movie that's a bit more geared towards kids. So, you get some of those scarier moments. However, you also get some campy humor thrown in there as well. It's not a movie that's gory or anything like that either.
The Monster Squad: To me, The Monster Squad is a movie I describe as what would happen if the goonies fought the Universal movie monsters. It's just a fun, cheesy 80s movie. If you're dipping your toe into the horror genre, this isn't a bad place to start.
Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead: I'm putting these two movies together for a simple reason. They are both comedies that poke fun at the zombie genre, while also sticking the rules established in zombie movies. These are good movies to put on if you are looking for a movie to laugh at.
Beetlejuice: Again, this a good movie to watch if you are just looking for something to laugh at. This is a movie that arguably stretches the definition of horror, like I mentioned some of them might. That said, this still has a lot of the elements found in the realm of horror, particularly ghosts.
The Addams Family and Addams Family Values: These movies are arguably an even bigger stretch in terms of considering them horror movies. But, the focus on especially dark and macabre humor, I think just barely allows them to qualify. These movies (especially Addams Family Values) are among my personal favorite comedies.
Little Shop of Horrors and The Rocky Horror Picture Show: These two movies are a bit more niche because they are horror musicals. But, they are also both films that embrace how ridiculous and campy they truly are. Rocky Horror is a cult film, so that one is a little bit more niche than Little Shop of Horrors. They are both movies I have some genuine fun with.
So, there you have it, a few movies that sort of fall in the parameters of the horror genre, and could be worth checking out if you're not into horror, or you're just curious about trying to get into the genre.
Good list!
