2020 Horror Movies I Saw Ranked
#10: Fantasy Island: I was interested in Fantasy Island purely out of interest in a bad movie. Had the entire thing been like the final act, this movie might not be in last place. However, the first hour is just a boring kind of bad to me, while the last half hour was the entertaining mess I was wanting this whole movie to be.
#9: The Grudge: The main thing The Grudge had going for it was an R rating. This was one of the very few films in the franchise to actually embrace gore. The actual plot and structure is where this movie just falls flat for me. There is very little else about it that stands out in any real meaningful way.
#8: You Should Have Left: This is one of those movies where I described it as the wrong kind of insane for me. The best way I could describe it as boring, which is not how I should describe this movie. The reason I don’t have this any lower is the lead performances by Kevin Bacon and Amanda Seyfried.
#7: Deep Blue Sea 3: From here on, I enjoy the movies on this list on some level. So, I really did not care for Deep Blue Sea 2, and I will say that I enjoyed this one a great deal more. Don't get me wrong, this movie still has some bad acting and wonky effects. But, this time, it kind of worked for me.
#6: Random Acts of Violence: For me, Random Acts of Violence just barely misses out on the top five because I don't entirely felt like this movie had a strong enough idea for the tone it was trying to go for. The actors all seemed to be pretty game. In a way, I kind of felt like this was a movie that took itself a little too seriously, and that kind of felt like it was actually a detriment to the film, as it wasn't as memorable as it could have been.
#5: The New Mutants: I think the biggest issue with The New Mutants is that it does feel a little too much like set up. What sets it apart from the movies I have ranked lower is that I get more out of the characters in this movie. Do I wish the horror elements could have been a little stronger? Yes, but I'm glad I actually got to watch this film on the whole.
#4: The Hunt: The Hunt was kind of tricky because I think this is the movie that is the hardest to define by genre. The movie has a pretty kick-ass lead performance by Betty Gilpin, and some fun supporting performances as well. I also have to give some props to a lot of the set pieces. This movie ranks so high for me just because I think it was fun.
#3: The Babysitter: Killer Queen: Speaking of movies I just thought were fun, the sequel to The Babysitter knew what worked about the first movie, and amped a lot of it up, for the most part. I wish Samara Weaving was in the movie more. But, I enjoyed seeing all of the returning cast, and the movie's increased gore. I also have to give props to franchise newcomer Jenna Ortega.
#2: Freaky: A running theme here is horror movies that were just fun for me. Freaky is a slasher movie take on the Freaky Friday concept. The movie's leads are excellent, especially Vince Vaugh. This is also a movie that's rated R, and embraces that it's rated R. This is a movie that has what might be one of my all-time favorite kills in a slasher movie.
#1: The Invisible Man: Here's what might be my favorite movie of 2020. Period. This is a movie that does a great job building up atmosphere, and understands how abusive relationships can work. I actually kind of appreciate that it's not necessarily a physically abusive relationship our protagonist is fleeing from. However, you still see that he's manipulative, controlling, and willing to do whatever is within his power. I also love the more modern take, using technology to achieve invisibility.
