The Final Destination

Plot Synopsis:

While at a NASCAR type event, Nick has a vision of one of the race cars crashing causing a lot of deaths. Realizing what’s about to happen, he gets himself and a select few people out before the crash happens. Of course, Death comes back to collect.

Positives:

A couple of kills are okay. There’s a scene where a racist guy gets lit on fire while being dragged by his tow truck (all while the radio plays “Why Can’t We Be Friends”). I want to highlight this kill because it’s the one time in the movie where I laugh, and I feel like that’s the intent. The other kill that I kind of like is the guy who ends up at the bottom of the pool. One of the side characters is a security guard played by Mykelti Williamson. Williamson is the best actor in the movie, and it’s not even close.

Negatives:

All of our main characters suck. At best, they’re bland. At worst, they’re annoying. I mentioned in my review for the third movie, that I felt the writing was weaker than it was in the first two. Well, the writing here is even worse. I mentioned how much I don’t like most of these characters. It’s because they’re less than cardboard cutouts. This fourth movie is only about 82 minutes. As a result, this is probably the most barebones movie in the franchise. Now, a lot of this I could potentially forgive if the effects were good. This is the movie in the series with the absolute worst visual effects. The acting is awful. Again, Mykelti Williamson is solid. Everyone else feels like they’re doing their first take, and that’s it. What’s even more painful is that this is from the creative team behind the second movie, which is one of my favorites of the series.

Final Thoughts:

Yeah. This is the bottom of the barrel for the Final Destination franchise. Just about everything in this represents the worst version of what the franchise has to offer.

My Rating:
