The Mouse Trap

Plot Synopsis: A group of friends have a birthday party at a Dave and Buster's style fun zone. While there, they are stalked and picked off one by one by a murderous version of Mickey Mouse. Positives: It's only 80 minutes. Negatives: Where to start? The acting is awful. I suppose the lead actress is the only person who gives a performance that isn't complete dogshit. But, that still doesn't make it good. Then again, how can I expect good performances with this script. This movie actually has a conversation that boils down to "I'll be right back." "Man, he's dead." It feels like the filmmakers watched Scream and thought to themselves, "we can do it better," but Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, they are not. Oh yeah, and Mickey teleports. Why is that a thing? You watch this thinking you might at least get some good kills. Nope. They are mostly bloodless and off-screen. I'd call the "characters" cardboard cutouts, but I ...

Nosferatu

Plot Synopsis: Thomas Hutter is sent from Germany to Transylvania to finalize a deal with the mysterious Count Orlok. Little does he know, this will lead to deadly consequences, especially as Orlok takes an interest in Hutter's wife, Ellen.  Positives: From a technical standpoint, this movie is immaculate. Even if you don't necessarily gel with Robert Eggers' style as a director, it should be clear that he knows what he's doing on a technical level. The sets, the costumes, the cinematography are all incredible. I also love the way the shadows are utilized. In particular, there's a shot in the trailer of the shadow of Orlok's hand spreading across this town. The performances are all incredibly strong. At this point, it should go without saying that the likes of Willem Dafoe and an unrecognizable Bill Skarsgard are going to do good work. But, the person who truly surprised me was Lily-Rose Depp. I've seen her other things and thought she was fine. Here, howeve...

The Crow (2024)

Image
Plot Synopsis: After he and his girlfriend are murdered, Eric Draven is resurrected by the spirit of a crow to avenge their murders.  Positives: There are a couple of fun action sequences near the end of the movie (in particular, one that takes place at an opera house). Bill Skarsgard is pretty solid in the lead. Hell, I would go so far as to say that he's the best performance in the movie. I also think the movie has some cool visuals every now and then.  Mixed: The main thing I am personally mixed on is the romance between Eric and Shelley. I actually kind of appreciate that the movie really spends the first act delving into their relationship. I also don't mind the idea that we're exploring a relationship between two people that are deeply broken. The problem is that Bill Skarsgard and singer FKA Twigs have absolutely no chemistry. Negatives: So, I brought up the fact that Skarsgard and FKA Twigs don't have any chemistry. Well, let me just say that her performance a...
