Slither

Plot Synopsis: A group of alien slugs descend on a small town, leaving only a small group of survivors to try and stop the invasion before it can spread.  Positives:  This is a movie that was written and directed by James Gunn, and his fingerprints are all over this movie. It's a sci-fi horror movie with a darkly comedic tone. For me, it strikes just the right balance with its humor. Adding on that, because this is a movie written and directed by James, that darkly comedic tone can be pretty mean-spirited. It mean it, this is a movie that shows a willingness to kill kids. This is a movie with a great cast including the likes of Elizabeth Banks, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and Jenna Fischer. All of the actors in this movie feel like they understand exactly the kind of movie they are in. I also have to compliment the movie's practical effects. They are just the right kind of gross, and I love it. I almost get sort of an 80s vibe, something like the remake of The Blob,...

Willy's Wonderland

Plot Synopsis:  When his car breaks down, a mysterious man (known only as the Janitor throughout the movie) is hired to spend the night cleaning out a run-down Chuck E. Cheese style establishment. As the night goes, he learns that the restaurant harbors a dark secret, and he has to fight to survive. Meanwhile, a group of local teens spend the night with a mission of their own, destroy Willy's Wonderland once and for all.  Positives:  The first thing about this movie that I appreciate is the sense of mystery that surround the first act. You always know something is wrong with Willy's Wonderland, but you don't know exactly what that something is until about the 20 minute mark. Furthermore, the main character of the janitor has a whole air of mystery around him as well. This movie has a pretty low budget. I bring this up because the animatronics look pretty damn good for a movie made for 5 million dollars. It should also come as no surprise that I really enjoy Nicolas...

There's Someone Inside Your House

Plot Synopsis:  A killer stalks a small town, and is set on killing them and exposing their deepest, darkest secrets.  Positives:  Starting things off with the things I liked, I think it's pretty creative that the killer always wears masks that resemble their victim's faces. I can also appreciate the brutality in some of the movie's kills. I mean it, there's a point where a character has their heels slashed open. Also, for a slasher movie, I actually like that some of these characters are decently fleshed out. In many ways, these characters are actually allowed to feel like people, especially the movie's final girl. However, I have more to say about the characters as a whole in another section.  Mixed Aspects: I've already kind of hinted at this. As much as I appreciate the fact that some of the characters have more development than most slasher movies give characters, sometimes I think it's to the movie's detriment. For example, one of the characters th...

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning

Plot Synopsis:  Years after the events of The Final Chapter, Tommy Jarvis ends up in a halfway home. Before too long, a killer begins murdering people in the area. But, with Jason dead, the question remains: Is this killer the ghost of Jason Voorhees or a copycat?  Spoiler Warning: Before I go on, I will be going into spoilers for this movie.  Negatives: For this movie, I think it's actually going to be easier if I start with the things I didn't like, and work my way back from there. For starters, this movie's final killer reveal does not work. When you really break it down, I don't think it makes any sense at all. The whole point of this movie was to set up Tommy Jarvis as Jason's replacement going forward. The question I have is this: Why didn't they just make Tommy the killer from the get-go? Now, I do have more to say about Tommy Jarvis in another section. Why even have Roy at all?? He literally does nothing to stand out as a character. His whole motivation ...
