Frankenstein

Image
Plot Synopsis: Henry Frankenstein makes the ultimate scientific breakthrough when he creates a man made from dead body parts and manages to bring it to life. His creation is almost immediately seen as an abomination, and this leads to, perhaps the ultimate question: who is the true monster?  Positives:  My first positive is the fact that this movie is relatively short. This allows the film to move at a pretty nice, quick pace. I feel like the movie knows when it should move quickly and when it should take its time. My next positive is James Whale's direction. The man shows an understanding of the gothic feel and atmosphere needed for Frankenstein to work. Even though this movie is in black and white, I get a good sense for angles and shadows throughout the movie. Colin Clive also gives a solid performance as Frankenstein. I feel he gives the character a good mix of madness and tragedy. Finally, I love everything involving the monster. Boris Karloff gives a really good performa...

Explaining My Rating System For My Horror Blog.

ðŸ©¸: This movie is awful. Avoid at all costs. This is the lowest rating I can give a movie.   🩸🩸: This movie is kind of just an underwhelming sort of bad.  🩸🩸🩸: This movie is decent. It gets sort of a soft recommendation from me, but you don't need to rush out and see it.  🩸🩸🩸🩸: This is a movie that's really good. See it if you can.  🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸: This is a must-see, top-tier kind of thing. This is as high as my rating system goes

Dracula

Image
Plot Synopsis:  A solicitor named Renfield travels to Transylvania in order to do business with the mysterious Count Dracula. Things take a sinister turn when Dracula makes his way to England and fixates on a woman named Mina. From there, characters must unravel what exactly is Dracula's plot.  Mixed Aspect:  I want to start with the one mixed aspect I have towards the movie. This movie takes a lot of liberties from the source material. I am starting here because I tend to like addressing adaptations on their own merits. That's why I am bringing this up right off the bat. It's not something I have particularly strong feelings about this one way or the other. It may help that the basic plot is intact. A lot of character actions and motivations are where the changes are made.  Positives:  From there, I would like to talk about the things I liked about this movie. The main thing that stands out is Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula. The man gives a performance that feels...

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Image
Plot Synopsis: When a fair comes to a small German town, a series of murders begins to occur. This leaves one man to try and unravel the mystery surrounding the leader of the fair, the mysterious Caligari.  Positives: The first thing about this movie I really want to compliment is the acting. Because this is a silent film, the actors have to rely on facial features and body movement. All of the actors do a solid enough job, especially the performers playing the antagonists. I also have to compliment the coloring.  Because this movie is from the early 1900s, I kind of just expected it to be traditional black-and-white going into it. I also really dig the score. Score is especially important to a silent film, and it really works for me here, and genuinely aids the film as it goes. Finally, I kind of appreciate the fact that this movie is only 80 minutes long Mixed Aspects:  My first mixed aspect is the production design. One one hand, I kind of like it because it loo...
