Fear Street Part One: 1994

Plot Synopsis:  When her ex has a vision of a witch that has cursed Shadyside for hundreds of years, Deena, her aforementioned ex Samantha, her younger brother Josh, and her friends Kate and Simon find themselves embroiled in trying to solve the mystery surrounding the witch named Sarah Fier, and survive several supernatural serial killers out to get them.  Positives: First of all, this movie largely pays homage to the slashers of the late '90s such Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. This movie does a really good job nailing that particular tone. Adding on to that, these are characters that I think would have felt right at home in that era. This is a movie that actually wants you to care about the characters. Something I appreciate is that they feel like real teens. Deena and Sam are emotional. You are essentially feeling like you're watching their relationship at its most volatile, and, as a result, these characters don't always come off as the most likable people...

Clown in a Cornfield

Plot Synopsis: Not long after her mother dies, Quinn Maybrook moves to a small town with her father after he accepts a position as the town doctor. Quinn befriends a group of teens and discovers the town has generational rift between her new friends and the adults of the town. Then, things take a deadly turn when the teenagers of the town are being murdered by someone dressed as the town's mascot, Frendo the Clown.  Positives:  This movie is directed by Eli Craig, the man who directed Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Little Evil. Because of this, the movie does a good job blending horror and comedy. It's also just shot well. I also appreciate the kills. In particular, there's one involving a saw and bench press. A lot of the acting is actually pretty damn good too. I would already expect that out of someone like Kevin Durand. But, I think the best performance in the movie is Katie Douglas as the lead. I wasn't familiar with her prior work, but I look forward to seeing more ...

House on Haunted Hill (1999)

Plot Synopsis: A group of strangers are brought to an abandoned asylum by a roller coaster tycoon. They each get a million dollars if they stay the night. Before long, they all realize there’s more to the house than they had initially anticipated. Positives: The first thing I want to highlight is the movie’s tone. This is a movie that operates as a roller coaster ride. As a result, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s just trying to be a fun time. For me, this really works. Jumping off from that, I really like the cast. The standouts have to be Famke Janssen and Geoffrey Rush. These are two people who are just awful people who have no love left for each other in their marriage. To clarify, yes, I am talking about the characters and not the actors. I also love the look of the house. They do a good job making the house feel like a character in and of itself. Mixed Aspects: As much as I like the cast performances, the characters themselves are fine. The relationship between the char...
