Ranking the Saw Franchise

Now that I have watched, re-watched, and reviewed all of the Saw movies, it's time for me to rank these bad boys.  #9: Saw 3D : This is probably the movie that has aged the worst for me in this entire franchise. I like some of the ideas. For example I like the idea of someone being placed in a trap just because that lied about being a Jigsaw survivor. But, forcing a completely innocent character into a trap, and then killing said character because her husband was a charlatan just doesn't sit right with me. Beyond that, this movie looks the cheapest in the franchise hands down. The twist ending was interesting, but they haven't done anything with it, at least, not yet. Oh, and the gore looks awful in this movie too.  #8: Saw IV : For the longest time, this was my least favorite of the Saw movies. The biggest issue I have with it is that it's the first movie in the series that feels it's complicated just for the sake of it. This movie also reaffirms my feeling that Ho...

Spiral: From the Book of Saw

Plot Synopsis:  Detective Zeke Banks has to find a serial killer targeting corrupt cops, especially because he is using the modus operandi of the Jigsaw killer.  Positives:  The first thing I really liked about this movie is that the traps feel incredibly painful. They aren't nearly as cartoony as some of the traps in the previous movies has sometimes felt (especially in Saw 3D ). I also feel the killer has a pretty understandable motive for why he's doing what he's doing. I also find it kind of surreal to have Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in a Saw movie. The two don't share a lot of screen-time together. When they do, however, their chemistry is solid. There is a bit more humor in this movie compared to the rest of the Saw franchise, and it mostly works for me. You can also notice that this movie has a little bit bigger budget in comparison to some of the previous films in the Saw franchise. This movie also brings back Darren Lynn Bousman who directed the second, t...

Jigsaw

Plot Synopsis: A new group of people find themselves trapped in a jigsaw game. Meanwhile, the cops have to figure out how and why a new game has started, and who is behind it.  Positives:  My first positive for this movie is that it honestly looks better than a lot of the previous Saw movies from a cinematography standpoint. It doesn't necessarily look high budget, but it definitely looks a lot less cheap by comparison. While there isn't any acting in this movie I would call Oscar-worthy, it is much better acted than some of the previous movies. It also doesn't hurt that we do have Tobin Bell back yet again for this movie. I also love this movie's use of practical effects. They actually look pretty damn good to me. Mixed Aspects:  The main thing I have mixed feelings towards is how the movie uses its twists. They aren't awful. But, they are just an example of pulling from tricks used in other Saw movies. For example, this movie plays with a game taking place at a di...
